چکیده

In regions of India where cultivation is rainfed, the optimal time to plant coincides with the onset of the monsoon. In this paper, we elicit from farmers their prior beliefs about the timing of the monsoon and assess their accuracy by comparing them to historical data. We find substantial heterogeneity in beliefs and ∗Financial support from CRMG, GARP and World Bank is gratefully acknowledged. We want to thank Kumar Acharya, the survey team at ICRISAT and specially Dr. K.P.C Rao for many discussions about agricultural practices in semi-arid India and for their efforts in collecting the survey data. Dr. Piara Singh from ICRISAT provided valuable help in the computation rainfall absorption of different soil types. We also thank Jean Marie Baland, Shawn Cole, Adelaine Delavande, Quy-Toan Do, Pascaline Dupas, Michael Kremer, Lance Lochner, Hanan Jacoby, David Mckenzie and participants in several conferences and seminars for valuable comments. Paola de Baldomero Zazo, Helene Bie Lilleor, Francesca de Nicola and Joan Pina Mart́ı provided outstanding research assistance. Study on Applicability of Conceptual Hydrological Models for Flood Forecasting in Humid, Semi-Humid Semi-Arid and Arid Basins in China

Flood simulation and forecasting in various types of watersheds is a hot issue in hydrology. Conceptual hydrological models have been widely applied to flood forecasting for decades. With the development of economy, modern China faces with severe flood disasters in all types of watersheds include humid, semi-humid semi-arid and arid watersheds. However, conceptual model-based flood forecasting ...

Real Time Flood Forecasting - Indian Experiences

The real time flood forecasting is one of the most effective nonstructural measures for flood management. For formulating the flood forecast in the real time, the observed meteorological and flow data are transmitted to the forecasting station through the different means of data communication which include telephone, wireless and network of telemetry stations etc. The collected meteorological a...

Zinc, boron and sulphur deficiencies are holding back the potential of rainfed crops in semi-arid India: Experiences from participatory watershed management

Little attention has been paid to the diagnosis of deficiencies of micronutrients such as zinc (Zn) and boron (B) and secondary nutrient such as sulphur (S) in rainfed systems. We evaluated Zn, B and S status of 1617 farmers’ fields in 14 districts of the semi-arid tropical India. Results showed that most of the soil samples were low to medium in organic carbon contents. Results also revealed t...
